Going Back To Go Forward

So... Question!

What happens when you think you're finally making progress? Answer ... You get a big old reality check!

No seriously, if you care about really playing you (and most definately me) need to respect that sometimes the only way forward is to go back. To revist songs you learnt and do them better, to realise techniques you thought you'd finally got somewhere with need far more work and to go back to basics. That's where I am this week across the board. It can be disheartening but we need to remember it's a compliment, it means we're ready to move on.

So me, I've now officially added bass guitar into my collection (I am so nuts doing this) at least to some degree and straight away I need to resolve issues!! No surprise there really but for now I need to focus on one string and getting my technique right. It's going to be thrilling!! Drums, same thing - rudiments and technique for me this week. Yay party on dude (side track, if you haven't seen Bill & Teds Excellent Adverture do so NOW!). Piano involves relearning a piece I was very pleased to move past originally but learning it much much better and focusing on ....???? Come on.. you know... yep technique!! And guitar is all about following chords, thinking less about cool solos (because you know I love to go all Hendrix in them, not!) and more about ... Oooh erm well ah let me think, yep that's it .. technique!

As well as those specific tasks I need to also focus on laying down tracks with all instruments which despite the fact it's what I desperately want to do for a living terrifies me beyond reason - how's that for a paradox!!

So I need to dig DEEP this week (no connection to my song but maybe I'll play it a lot to remind me!). But on a serious note, this is learning music. It's about the journey and sometimes going backwards, at least feeling like you are means you're taking a big step forward so never be afraid of it. Stay focused and find the fun even in the most boring tasks.
